Nippon Gakki built the Hamakita Factory in January of 1955 and the Yamaha YA-1 went into production. Within 7 months, the Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. was born on July 1, 1955. With a staffed of 274 raring to go employees, the new motorcycle manufacturer built approximately a whopping 200 units per month.
Yamaha began it proud racing history that same year. Yamaha entered its new YA-1 in the two biggest race events in Japan. The two races were the 3rd Mt. Fuji Ascent Race and the 1st Asama Highlands Race. Living up to the designers expectation, Yamaha won the 125cc class. Not to rest on their laurels, the following year the YA-1 not only won the Light but also the Ultra-light classes of the Asama Highlands Race.
By 1956, a second model was ready for production. This was the YC1, a 175cc single cylinder two-stroke. In 1957 Yamaha began production of its first 250cc, two-stroke twin, the YD1. Based upon these early success, Yamaha designed a real-world illustration motorcycle, the Yamaha DT-1. It was the world's first true off-road motorcycle debuted in 1968. Thus the class of trail and dirt bikes was created and continues to this day. The DT-1 made history and a huge impact on motorcycling in the USA because it was truly dirt worthy. Yamaha. It appears that Yamaha was headed in the right direction when it produced the 250cc, single cylinder, 2-stroke, Enduro. This put Yamaha On/Off-Road motorcycles on the map in the USA and they are still there today. The DT-1 exemplified the power of original ideas, forward vision, and quick action coupled with keeping in mind the customers' desires for speed, agility and reliability. Not only did Yamaha help create the dirt bike industry but spawn motorcycle accessories, motorcycle parts, ATV, and other related motorcycle businesses.
